WashingtonCountyAttorneysOffice2012AnnualReport3MessagefromtheCountyAttorney.WelcometotheWashingtonCountyAttorneysOfficesannualreportfor2012.IthankyouforyourinterestinmyofficesworkandIamconfidentthattheachievementsofmyofficesattorneysandstaffin2012willimpressyouasmuchastheyhaveme.AlongwithourpartnersinlawenforcementandthecommunitiesthroughoutWashingtonCountytheCountyAttorneysOfficehasaccomplishedagreatdealtoenhancepublicsafety.InthepasttwoyearstheWashingtonCountyAttorneysofficehasredefineditsmissiontobetterprotectourcitizensandserveourcountybyinstitutinganumberofinitiativesthathaveproventobehighlysuccessful.Wehaveturnedourfocusonthreeareas.Thefirstisourdeterminationandintensefocusonviolentcrime.Thesecondisacommitmenttohelpingcrimevictimstorecoverfromcrimesandtoattainafeelingofjusticeaswellastoavoidbecomingvictimsagain.Thethirdfocusisinoureffortstodecreasecrimebyallocatingourresourcesintoareasthatweknowfromsignificantresearchcanachievesuccess.This2012AnnualReportrepresentsasnapshotoftheworkthatourofficedoeseverydayonbehalfofthecitizensofWashingtonCounty.Ithighlightsjustsomeofthemanyaccomplishmentscomingfromtheworkofourdedicatedteamofprosecutorsandstaffwhoseekjusticeinourcourtroomsandcommunities.IremaindeeplygratefulfortheopportunitytoserveastheWashingtonCountyAttorneyandlookforwardtoworkingwithyouandourcommunitiestomakeadifferenceinthequalityoflifeforallcitizensofWashingtonCounty. WashingtonCountyAttorneysOffice2012AnnualReport7JuvenileDivisionOverviewThejuveniledivisionledbyDivisionChiefTonyZdroikprosecutesalljuvenilecriminalcasesinWashingtonCounty.Inthemostseriouscasesthedivisionwillmovetocertifyjuvenileswhocommitviolentcrimestoadultcourtifwarranted.ThedivisionalsoprovideslegalrepresentationtoCommunityServicesonchildprotectionmatters.ThosecasesinvolvechildreninWashingtonCountywhohavebeenabusedorneglectedbytheirparentsorlegalguardian.ProgramsandPartnershipsin2012TruancyInitiativeInFebruarytheAttendanceInterventionMeetingAIMwasstarted.Staffcollaboratewiththeschooldistricttoholdmonthlymeetingswithstudentswhoarehavingtruancyissuesandtheirparents.Thoseinattendanceareprovidedapresentationaboutthelegalrequirementsofschoolattendanceandtheimpactschoolfailureanddroppingouthasonthestudentandsociety.ChargingTurnaroundTimeOnthejuvenileprosecutionsideofthecaseloadtheoverallturnaroundtimeforchargingdecisionsdecreasedfrom7.6daysto6.2days.JuvenileProsecutionDeclinationLettersThenumberofcasesdeclinedforprosecutionshowedasharpdecrease.In2009thedivisiondeclinedprosecutionon247casesreferredbylawenforcement.Thatnumberwasreducedto178in2010andcontinueditsdeclineto118casesfor2011and2012.JuvenileDivisionChiefTonyZdroikAttorneysRickAllenSueHarrisErinJohnsonMaryPieperLegalAssistantsSherryHillmanTeriSelden
